May 2026 Monthly Report 6 Reps Active

May's centerpiece is a finish-quality problem on the MPS-2043 SBF head stud kit — now documented in 21 mentions across 11 accounts, traced to a packaging change, and quietly costing Merrick 9 counter-swaps to TorqMax that never reach HQ as a warranty claim. Alongside it: a $186,000 annualized opportunity pipeline, seven deals tracked from field notes the way a vendor-lead process should work, and real traction on the quarter's agreed goals — 214 of 240 touches, 16 of 20 displays, 5 committed and 2 quoted new-line adds against an 8-deal target.

None of this exists without the capture. Beacon Ridge logged 168 field notes at 40–100 words apiece in May, replacing the old habit of ten-to-twenty-word CRM one-liners with real conversations — names, SKUs, quantities, and quotes attached to a date and an account. The analysis is only as good as the capture; this month, the capture was good enough to build a downloadable target list, a tracked pipeline, and a measurable goal readout, not just a summary. Details, verbatims, and actions follow.

Across the territory, builders are opening sealed MPS-2043 kits to find the black oxide gone hazy, spotted, or flaking at the threads — corrosion out of a factory-sealed box. All six reps have now logged it, and the pattern is specific: every affected kit is from this spring's restock. Older shelf stock checks out clean at every account that has compared the two side by side.
"Everything from last year is clean, every hazy kit is from this spring's restock, and he says the first bad one showed up early April. That's a production or packaging pattern, not storage."Gary · Lakeshore Speed & Machine, Muskegon MI · call, May 6
"Every bad 2043 is recent stock, everything that has sat on his shelf since last year is clean, and he pegs the first bad kit at early April. That matches Columbus and what Dana is seeing in Michigan."Terry · Bishop Brothers Racing, Findlay OH · call, May 14
Root-cause hypothesis (from the field pattern): the timing lines up with Merrick's early-2026 switch from VCI liner paper to plain poly bags in the MPS-2043 kit packaging. VCI paper actively inhibits corrosion in transit and storage; poly bags don't. That would explain why only post-February lots are affected and why the studs corrode inside a still-sealed kit. Several accounts are holding suspect kits and boxes aside specifically so Beacon Ridge can pull lot codes and confirm it.
Beacon Ridge Action
Pull physical lot samples from the kits held at Lakeshore, Northwoods, Vantage, Bishop Brothers and Derby City; cross-reference box lot codes against the February packaging change and get VCI-vs-poly confirmed with Merrick QC before it spreads further into the channel.
Silent Displacement 9 documented swaps
The Counter Is Routing Around The Warranty Portal
This is why the problem is invisible at HQ. Merrick's new warranty portal requires photos plus the original receipt to file a claim on a returned kit. Counter staff won't do that for a stud kit — so instead of filing, they hand the customer a TorqMax set and move on. Beacon Ridge documented 9 of these swaps in May, at Lakeshore, Northwoods, Torque Bros, Bishop Brothers, Wabash Valley, Rockford, Kettle Moraine, Derby City and Vantage. Each swap is a lost sale that generates zero warranty signal — the defect never shows up in Merrick's returns data.
"I'm not shooting photos and chasing a receipt over a stud kit. I just hand the guy a TorqMax and move on."Gary · Lakeshore Speed & Machine, Muskegon MI · counter day, May 1
"They want photos and the original receipt for a stud kit? Customer's already mad. I just give him a TorqMax and eat it."Terry · Bishop Brothers Racing, Findlay OH · visit, May 6
The competitive damage compounds the quality damage: TorqMax is already pushing hard in this territory (Section F), so every friction-driven swap hands them a warm customer at Merrick's expense. Builders are blunt about the stakes — Luis at Wabash Valley said flatly he "can't put questionable hardware in a twelve-thousand-dollar engine," and Terry's patience has a limit: he's told Beacon Ridge his "patience has a June expiration date" — if clean replacement stock hasn't shipped by then, the whole SBF peg at Bishop Brothers goes to TorqMax.
Beacon Ridge Action
Stand up an interim claim path that bypasses the portal for flagged MPS-2043 lots — rep-verified direct credit, no photo/receipt burden on the counter. Publish it territory-wide before Terry's June deadline arrives and more of the nine swap accounts default to TorqMax permanently.
Recommended Response For Merrick HQ
Get Ahead Of It Before It Becomes The Brand Story
The finish issue is contained to one SKU and one lot window — which makes it very fixable if Merrick moves before it becomes the story customers tell about the brand. A short, honest counter card — "we identified a packaging issue on recent SBF kits, here's the no-hassle replacement path" — turns a quiet defect into a trust win and stops the TorqMax bleed before it hardens into a habit.
Beacon Ridge Action
Draft a one-page counter card announcing the fix and the interim replacement path, and route verified fresh SBF stock to the 11 affected accounts ahead of Terry's June deadline. Give reps a fix to hand out alongside the replacement stock, not just an apology.

~2.3×Reorder Signal
The Torque-Up counter display is up and running at 16 of 22 stocking accounts, verified by reps in person or on the phone. Rebate-driven Pro Series reorders followed close behind — Sal at Ironwood placed "his biggest Pro Series order this year," and Vince at Rockford called his "his largest single Pro Series order" with Beacon Ridge. The six accounts without a display up are the transition, WD, and short-staffed cases carried in the Field Coverage note below, not lost campaign effort.
Reorder signal, phrased honestly: accounts with the display up reordered Pro Series at roughly 2.3× the rate of accounts without one this month. The direction is clear and consistent across the territory, but the sample is small (16 vs. 6) and the window is one month — read it as a strong directional signal, not a precise multiplier.

Money Left On The Table — And Recovered
6 accounts were sitting on the Torque-Up rebate because staff believed it was consumer-only and weren't applying it to shop or wholesale tickets: Great Lakes Cylinder Head, Crossroads Cylinder, Redline Motorworks, Bluegrass Speed, Kettle Moraine Machine, and Badger Performance Warehouse. In every case, once a rep walked the wholesale claim path, the account reordered on the spot — the same misread, three separate territories, which is exactly why it's a program-sheet fix and not an account-by-account one.
"Six weeks of campaign, lost to one misread program sheet."Dale · Crossroads Cylinder, Kokomo IN · visit, May 5
Beacon Ridge Action
Feed the "wholesale & build invoices qualify" clarification back into Merrick's program sheet and co-op email kit in bigger, plainer type — this is a wording problem, not an account problem, and it's costing rebate volume everywhere a rep hasn't visited yet.

What The Counter Said About The Rebate, Once It Clicked
Once the wholesale claim path was actually explained, accounts didn't just fix the misread going forward — they went back for the tickets they'd already left on the table, and they had opinions about why it took this long.
"Says the program is decent once you understand it, which from Stan is roughly a standing ovation."Stan · Kettle Moraine Machine, Waukesha WI · call, May 13
"The program sheet is the problem, not the counters."Pete · Badger Performance Warehouse, Madison WI · visit, May 7

Where The Creative Worked — And Where Staffing Got In The Way
The co-op kit itself performed when accounts actually ran it. Where the campaign fell short, it wasn't the creative — it was counter bandwidth to execute it.
"First co-op campaign this account has ever run and Pete's already asking whether there's a fall version."Pete · Badger Performance Warehouse, Madison WI · call, May 21
"Not the campaign execution anyone drew up, but it's what a two-man counter in race season looks like."Randy · Cheddarhead Speed, Green Bay WI · call, May 14

How the Counter Talks About Merrick 22
Legacy Brand Gap 9 notes · 8 accounts
Customers Still Ask For "Duncans" — And Some Walk
FoundryLine is the 2018 rebrand of the acquired Duncan Bolt & Stud — same parts, same Dayton plant, new name. Eight years later, older engine builders and retired machinists still walk in asking for "Duncan studs" by the old DB part numbers. Veteran counter staff translate on the spot; newer hires, who've never heard the name, tell customers Merrick doesn't carry it. Beacon Ridge logged this at 8 accounts across 9 notes in May — Ironwood, Halstead, Great Lakes Cylinder Head, Crossroads, Fort Wayne, Lake County (twice), Kettle Moraine, and Bluegrass — and at least one of them cost Merrick a sale outright.
"An older builder came in asking for a set of Duncans for a 350, and Nadia's new counter hire told him we don't carry Duncan, and the guy walked. Bought elsewhere that afternoon."Nadia · Lake County Cylinder Head, Gurnee IL · visit, May 4
Beacon Ridge Action
Print a Duncan-to-FoundryLine cross-reference card (old DB-series numbers mapped to FL SKUs) and get it onto every order desk that's asked for one — Cheryl at Fort Wayne, Janet at Halstead, and Nadia at Lake County all requested it independently this month.
Brand Asset 6 notes
A Nickname That Sells Itself
The gold ring machined on the Pro Series stud head has become the brand's calling card at the counter — customers ask for it by nickname, no SKU, no brand name, just the ring. Beacon Ridge captured it at Bluegrass, Cheddarhead, Rockford, Derby City, Torque Bros, and Lakeshore this month, and more than one account is already using it as an anti-substitution device against the TorqMax kit sitting next to it.
"her counter guys and half her customers call Pro Series the gold-ring studs, and she leans into it, tells people to look for the gold ring so they know it is the real Merrick and not the TorqMax kit sitting next to it."Marla · Derby City Machine, Louisville KY · call, May 15
"his dyno customers ask for 'the gold-ring studs' on build sheets, by nickname, unprompted. One customer specifically wrote gold ring studs on his build request form."Vince · Rockford Racing Engines, Rockford IL · call, May 13

Counter Staff Think It's Overseas — It Isn't
The flip side of the brand story: counter staff at 7 accounts — Great Lakes Cylinder Head, Ohio Valley, Hoosier, Fort Wayne, Lake County, Cheddarhead, and Badger — assume FoundryLine is an import line, and some have been actively steering customers away from it. It's US-made, in the same Dayton plant as Pro Series. Every rep who corrected it got the same reaction: genuine surprise, then interest.
"why he would stock FoundryLine 'if it's just import hardware.'"Otis · Hoosier Head & Block, Muncie IN · call, May 6
"my guys believe laminated things"Pete · Badger Performance Warehouse, Madison WI · call, May 15
Beacon Ridge Action
The cheapest fix in the report: a printed "Made in Dayton, same plant as Pro Series" counter card. Cheryl at Fort Wayne asked for it by name, and Otis at Hoosier flipped to stocking a FoundryLine starter assortment the moment he learned the truth (see Section C, Opportunity #7). Print it and the sell-through follows.

Competitive Intelligence 03
Competitor · TorqMax May 7
TorqMax Is Running Monthly Counter Days
Tom walked into Ohio Valley to find a TorqMax rep mid-counter-day — coffee, donuts, spiff sheets for Duane's staff. "Duane says TorqMax does this monthly now and their rep knows his counter guys by name." This is a structured mindshare program, not a one-off, and it's the same aggression Cheryl described at the Fort Wayne WD level.
"She likes Merrick quality but her line is that TorqMax makes it easy to say yes."Cheryl · Fort Wayne Fastener & Supply · call, May 14
Beacon Ridge Action
Tom is lining up a Merrick counter day at Ohio Valley for June to answer the monthly TorqMax presence, paired with the new opening Pro Series stock program (Section C, Opportunity #4).
Competitor · TorqMax May 20
Rebate + Freight + Dropship, All At Once
TorqMax's playbook is consistent across the territory: rebate-heavy, free freight, and dropship already in place at the WD level. The displacement risk from the MPS-2043 finish issue (Section A) sits directly on top of this — TorqMax is the default fallback the counter reaches for the moment friction shows up anywhere in the relationship.
"TorqMax already dropships to her stores and she would rather grow FoundryLine, but she is building her fall program now and will fill the slot with whoever commits first."Janet · Halstead Auto Warehouse, Livonia MI · call, May 20
Beacon Ridge Action
Treat the Halstead dropship decision (Section C, Opportunity #1) as a competitive countermove, not just an opportunity — every month Merrick doesn't answer it, TorqMax's dropship lead deepens.
Competitor · KineBolt May 7
Niche Road-Race, Not A Volume Threat
KineBolt shows up only where road-race customers request it by name, and even there it isn't winning on volume.

From Your Beacon Ridge Team
May was the month the field notes started paying for themselves twice over. The MPS-2043 finish issue — nine silent swaps, zero warranty claims — is now a documented, dated, root-cause-hypothesized alert with the fix path already in motion. And underneath it, the same 168 notes built a $186,000 tracked pipeline and a measurable Q2 scorecard: 89% of the touches goal, 80% of the displays goal, and 7 of 8 new-line adds already committed or quoted.
Three things move the needle in June: get lot samples to Merrick QC before Terry's deadline, stand up the interim replacement path before more customers walk into a TorqMax kit, and answer Halstead's dropship ask while the window's open. None of this is a guess — it's traced to a dated note and a named account, which is the whole point of capturing it this way.
